Determined by what I've observed and skim in other resources, the oval (P) evidence mark wasn't launched until eventually 1908. Prior to that point, Winchester marked “OF” (outside fitted) on the bottom in the barrel beneath the forend stock for your mail order barrels. For the best of my know-how, in the event you find a pre-1905 Winchester that has a “WP” proof on the barrel, but not over the receiver, someone other than Winchester swapped the barrel.
